15. Au Pied de Cochon

Address: Au Pied de Cochon is located at 536 Avenue Duluth E, Montréal, QC H2L 1A9, Canada.

It’s arguable that Chef Martin Picard’s Au Pied de Cochon is the greatest restaurant in Montreal and a classic of the Québécois cuisine.

Meat lovers, rejoice: Au Pied de Cochon is open five evenings a week to bring you the best of Montreal’s produce and livestock. There is just one fine dining establishment in Montreal that can compare to this one.

While Au Pied de Cochon does have slightly higher costs than the average restaurant, the excellent quality of the products and the quantity of the servings make them well worth it.

At Au Pied de Cochon, there are two obstacles to overcome. The primary difficulty is that there are few options for vegetarians among the “nose to tail” menu items.

Meat eaters, however, pose an even greater problem because they will want to try every item on the menu.

There are so many great dishes here, starting with the finest onion soup we’ve ever had (even in Paris) and continuing on through the foie gras-loaded poutine and the revolutionary duck in a can.

You should order a little bit of everything and split it with your pals.

16. Schwartz’s

Address: Schwartz’s is located at 3895 St Laurent Blvd, Montreal, QC H2W 1X9, Canada.

Schwartz’s serves exclusively smoked meat sandwiches, and they do it really well.

Even though Reuben Schwartz established the legendary “Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen” in 1928, the best Reuben sandwich can only be found in New York City.

Schwartz’s, located in the Plateau area, is famous for its smoked pork on rye. Exactly what it says on the tin The yellow mustard and extras (they have great french fries) are on the house.

While other Montreal eateries may offer sandwiches made with spice-rubbed brisket, Schwartz’s is the original and gold standard.

If you’re craving a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz’s, I recommend getting the medium-fat beef and topping it with some yellow mustard.

You can’t go wrong with fries and a half-sour pickle. Even better, stock up on rye bread so you can share with a pal.

Another piece of advice: if you want to skip the long lines, get your sandwich at the take-out counter next door and dine at the window seat in the rear. The price is right for one of the greatest sandwiches ever created.

17. La Banquise

Address: La Banquise is located at 994 Rue Rachel E, Montréal, QC H2J 2J3, Canada.

Pierre Barsalou didn’t provide poutine when he first launched La Banquise in the Plateau area in 1968.

This kitschy Montreal institution is now run by Annie Barsalou and her partner Marc Latendresse, who inherited the business from Barsalou.

There are more than 30 different ways to customize your poutine at this restaurant. Some of our favorite poutines at La Banquise are the Hot Dog poutine with hot dog slices and the The Elvis poutine with ground beef, peppers, and mushrooms.

To those who are unfamiliar, poutine is a dish created in Quebec that consists of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds.

Though it may be found in a number of Montreal eateries, La Banquise is often considered to be the best due to its extensive menu and constant availability.

That’s correct, you spotted a typo. Anytime of day or night, La Banquise is open to satisfy your craving for poutine. Nothing beats coming home to a platter of fries and gravy after a night of “socializing,” in our opinion.
